Data from the National Bank of Poland shows that at the end of March, the value of money in circulation exceeded PLN 380 billion
The NBP has published statistics on the structure of banknotes and coins in circulation as at the end of March. The document shows that the value of cash reached PLN 380.7 billion. This means that it was the highest since Q1 2022, i.e. since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, when Poles took money out of their accounts en masse for fear of an escalation of the conflict. Back then, cash in circulation reached PLN 389.4 billion.
Q1 2024 was the fourth consecutive quarter when the value of banknotes and coins in circulation increased. In the final period of last year, it stood at PLN 377.2 billion. By contrast, in Q1 2023. - PLN 363.5 billion.
Traditionally, the banknote with the largest number in circulation was the PLN 100 note. At the end of March, there were 1.475 billion pieces of this banknote on the market. According to experts, it is the most popular banknote in Poland, as it performs two basic functions: it is a transaction banknote, i.e. it is used for payments, e.g. in shops, and at the same time it performs the so-called assets function, i.e. it is used to store savings.
The remaining banknotes in circulation are significantly fewer. For example, those with a face value of PLN 200 - 864 million, 'fifties' - 210 million and 'tens' - 215 million. The rarest banknote on the market is, of course, the PLN 500, of which there were 76.6 million in circulation at the end of March. Interestingly, however, the second least common banknote is, as in previous periods, the '20' with 155.4 million pieces.
